7 Things Your Wedding Band Wishes You Knew
When you book a live band for your wedding you aren’t just paying musicians to play songs. You are investing in the atmosphere of your entire evening. Whilst practical logistics are crucial and well-advised, the actual energy of a room is going be directed by a crowd of drunken friends and family, the weather and a few hidden factors that you may not have considered.
After years of filling dance floors across North Wales and the North West, here are seven insider secrets to protecting your party’s vibe.
Sound Limiters Affect More Than Just Volume
Many venues, for various reasons, have a strict traffic-light style sound limiter on the wall. What does this mean? Ultimately, if a band plays too loud then the power to the stage cuts out. That is obviously going to kill the mood but it can also be affected in other ways. A band not equipped or used to dealing with them may find themselves holding back and not give the room the energy it needs. This is why we run a silent stage and rely on in ear monitoring. Gone are the days of Marshall stacks pumping out a wall of noise (think Slash from Guns and Roses) and in is the modern way of reducing on stage sound as much as possible.
Flexible Timings Save the Night
We’re all for a well planned wedding and know that it’s always done with the best intentions. That being said, rare is the wedding that runs to schedule! We see it every weekend - speeches overrunning, photos taking longer than expected or issues with shoes/dresses/suits. The important thing is not to panic! A seasoned live band is used to these changes and will handle them with ease.
A Great Venue Team Changes Everything
The flow of a great wedding relies on the suppliers and organisers working together. A brilliant wedding coordinator or entertainments manager makes our job so much easier which translates into a better show. We love working alongside the dedicated teams at venues like Tyn Dwn Hall and Iscoyd Park because when the coordinators, planners and band are on the same page, the evening flows effortlessly.
Beware the Bar!
Now this one cannot always be helped but is one to be aware of if you can control it. Few things tempt people away from a dance floor like a bar that is out of sight. Rather than stepping off the dance floor for another pint, guests find themselves wandering down a corridor to find the next drink before getting distracted by a long lost relative. Before long, you’ve lost half of the party!
Your First Dance Doesn’t Have to be Played Live
We love getting requests in for a couple’s first dance and it’s always interesting when it takes us down a path we wouldn’t usually go down. That being said, some songs hit because of how well they were put together in the studio and that can be difficult to recreate live. Think about it - if the song you have in mind works because it has a soaring string section and choir, will a band, even with six members, be able to recreate it in the same way?
The Guests Will Mirror Your Energy
Not to pile more pressure on anyone’s big day but….one of the things we always see is that guests have a habit of going wherever the married couple go. If the newlyweds are quietly chatting at the back of the room or chilling outside then that is generally where the guests will follow. Some of the best weddings we have played have had the married couple front and centre of the dance floor soaking up every minute.
The Best Weddings Feel Relaxed Behind the Scenes
It can be temping to take a look at the songs a band plays and put together a detailed wish list of what you want them to play. Taking this approach however, can take out some of the dynamics of what happens on the night. An experienced band can read the room and know when to put in a certain crowd please or when to push the tempo up or down. That’s not to say you need to be completely hands off, but give the band a sense of what you want, select a handful of songs you’d love to hear and then watch them do their thing.
